Best UPS for Home in Greece (2026): What to Buy for Power Cuts, Your Router and Your PC

George SpyrouPublished: 21 October 20269 min read

How to size a home UPS in Greece without wasting money: VA vs watts, runtime maths, which models fit a router, a laptop or a desktop PC, and the mistakes to avoid. Researched, not lab-tested.

Key Facts

  • Size a UPS by watts, not VA — the Bitmore listings state both (850 VA = 480 W, 1,200 VA = 600 W)
  • For a router and fibre box alone, a 15 W DC mini UPS is cheaper and lasts longer than a PC-size unit
  • Keep the connected load under roughly 70–80% of the UPS's watt rating
  • Never plug an air conditioner, heater, kettle or laser printer into a UPS
  • Outage.gr community: 11,247 reports since February 2026, 10,893 about electricity
10,893power-cut reports on Outage.gr since Feb 2026

When the power drops, you notice three things within seconds: the lights, the router and the PC. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) can keep the last two alive for long enough to save your work, finish a call or simply stay online. It will not run your air conditioner and it is not a generator. This guide is about choosing the right size for a Greek home, not the biggest box on the shelf.

Is it worth it? Outage.gr has collected 11,247 community reports since February 2026, and 10,893 of them are about electricity. They arrive in waves: 859 reports in June, 2,783 in August and 3,281 in September. We cannot tell you how long a typical cut lasts, because only 95 of our reports have a measured start-to-finish duration, so we do not publish an average (more on that in our methodology). What the data does show is that cuts are frequent and widespread enough to justify spending a modest amount on the devices you least want to lose power.

VA, watts and runtime: the only maths you need

Three rules cover almost every purchase.

  • Buy by watts. VA is the apparent power on the box; watts are what the UPS can actually deliver. Both Bitmore listings state both numbers: 850 VA is 480 W and 1,200 VA is 600 W.
  • Add up your real load. Look at the label on each power brick. Keep the total below roughly 70–80% of the UPS's watt rating so it is not running flat out.
  • Runtime is a simple fraction. Battery energy (Wh) × about 0.7–0.8 efficiency ÷ your load (W) gives hours. A 100 Wh battery feeding a 50 W load lasts roughly 1.5 hours in theory, and less under heavy loads because lead-acid batteries lose capacity as the draw rises.

The headline listings we reviewed do not state battery capacity, so open the full datasheet or ask the retailer before you count on a specific runtime.

Typical loads (ranges, check your own labels):

DeviceTypical draw
Router + fibre box (ONT)10–25 W
Wi-Fi mesh node5–10 W
Laptop (charging)30–65 W
24-inch monitor15–30 W
Office desktop PC60–150 W
NAS (a few drives)20–40 W
Gaming PC under load250–500 W (too much for the 850 VA class)

Our picks

Router and fibre box: the cheapest protection you can buy

If staying online is the goal, you do not need a PC-size UPS. A small DC unit powers the router directly from its battery and avoids the AC-to-DC conversion losses of a big UPS.

Kotsovolos

Lamtech Mini DC UPS 15W (9V / 12V output)

The cheapest way to keep your router and fibre box alive

  • 15 W DC UPS with 9 V / 12 V output
  • Kotsovolos positions it for broadband users and says it keeps the connection powered for “several hours”
  • Check your router’s adapter label (volts and watts) before buying

Before you buy, read the label on your router's power adapter. It shows volts (9 V or 12 V) and amps, and the unit's output has to match. Many fibre setups also have a separate adapter for the fibre box (ONT), so check whether you need to power both. Our companion guide, how to stay online during a power cut, covers the mobile-data alternatives.

A laptop, PC and monitor

Public

Choose the 850 VA class for a laptop dock, one monitor and a router. Step up to 1,200 VA when you have a desktop plus two screens, or a PC, a NAS and the router on the same unit. The U1200LCD also lists two RJ11 ports for phone-line protection.

A branded option with voltage regulation

Kotsovolos

Legrand Keor SP 1000VA

A mains-quality brand for a home office or media corner

  • Line-Interactive VI technology with built-in AVR (voltage regulation), per Kotsovolos
  • 2 IEC + 2 Schuko outputs and a 1 USB Type-A 5 V port
  • Kotsovolos describes protection against surges, short circuits and thermal protection

Listing title: Legrand UPS 1000VA 2 IEC & 2 Schuko & 1 USB Type A/5V

Kotsovolos lists the Legrand with built-in voltage regulation (AVR). That can help with brown-outs (temporary low voltage), because the UPS corrects the voltage without switching to battery.

Seven mistakes to avoid

  1. Plugging in heavy appliances. Air conditioners, heaters, kettles, hair dryers and laser printers can overload a UPS instantly.
  2. Buying on VA alone. Two units with the same VA can have different watt ratings.
  3. Ignoring the router's voltage. A DC UPS with the wrong output voltage can damage the router.
  4. Forgetting the fibre box. If only the router is on the UPS, the ONT still goes dark and you are offline anyway.
  5. Never testing it. Unplug it from the wall once a month and make sure the devices stay up.
  6. Expecting lifetimes of ten years. Sealed lead-acid batteries typically need replacing after a few years. Check the manual.
  7. Treating it as lightning protection. A direct strike on the line can defeat a UPS and a surge protector alike. That is what insurance is for (below).

When the UPS beeps but only lasts a minute

That is nearly always a worn battery, not a dead UPS. Replacement batteries cost far less than a new unit. Match the voltage and capacity (Ah) printed on the old battery, and recycle the old one properly.

UPS, surge protector or insurance?

A UPS covers cuts and dips. A surge protector (see our power-cut kit guide) covers voltage spikes when power returns. Neither covers everything: reporters flagged damage in 617 Outage.gr reports (5.5% of the total), and 236 of those were in September alone. If expensive electronics are involved, check what your home insurance says about electrical damage. We explain what to look for in does home insurance cover power surge damage in Greece, and you can compare quotes in a few minutes.

Where do cuts happen?

Crete and Attica led our report counts in August and September, and the Crete interconnection fault on 7 September shows how a single event can hit a whole island: see what happened in the Crete blackout and our summer 2026 report. You can check your own area on the outage map, and a report from you (it takes under a minute) helps the next person: report an outage.

Quick answers

Can a UPS run a fridge? Not a good idea. Compressors draw a large surge when they start, and most small UPS units are not designed for that. A portable power station is the better tool; see the power-cut kit guide.

Should I leave it plugged in? Yes. It only protects you if its battery is charged.

What if I just want to shut the PC down safely? Any of the PC-size units here gives you time to save and shut down. Install the UPS's monitoring software if it has any, or simply shut down by hand.

Online or line-interactive? The PC-size units in this guide are line-interactive, which is the standard for home use. Online (double-conversion) UPS units cost much more and are meant for servers.
