Water Supply Disruptions in Greece: What You Need to Know

Water supply disruptions in Greece can happen due to pipe breaks, scheduled maintenance by EYDAP (Athens) or EYATH (Thessaloniki), drought conditions, or infrastructure failures. Unlike power outages, water issues can pose immediate health and sanitation concerns.

Types of Water Disruptions

  • Complete shutoffNo water at all; usually caused by main pipe breaks or valve work
  • Low pressureWater comes out slowly; often during peak demand or partial repairs
  • Discolored waterBrown or cloudy water after pipe work; usually temporary and harmless but unsightly
  • Scheduled maintenancePlanned by the water authority with advance notice

Who to Contact

EYDAP (Athens & Attica): 1022 or 210-2144444 — 24/7 fault reporting EYATH (Thessaloniki): 2310-966600 For other areas, contact your local DEYA (municipal water utility) Report on Outage.gr too — select 'Water' as the utility type so your neighbors know.

During a Water Outage

  • Fill containers with water as soon as you suspect an outage — supply may diminish gradually
  • If water returns discolored, run cold taps for a few minutes until it clears before using
  • Don't use hot water during the outage if you have an electric water heater — it may burn out without water flow
  • Keep bottled water stocked at home (at least 3 liters per person per day for 2 days)
  • If the outage lasts more than 24 hours, contact your water authority for alternatives (water trucks)

Your Rights

Greek consumer law requires water utilities to maintain reasonable service standards. Prolonged or repeated disruptions may entitle you to compensation or bill adjustments. Document every disruption on Outage.gr to build evidence for complaints to the Consumer Ombudsman (synigoroskatanaloti.gr).
